Why 2020 was a great year.
2020 has been a great year. Are you mad ? you say, coronavirus, lockdown, social distancing. Pubs closed, lives lost, jobs lost, I could go on and on. Hear me out before you call me a mad man.
The picture on the left is a picture of my former wife Jane together with my daughter Vicki. Its an old picture but its shows Jane how I best remember her. Looking happy, attractive with a beautiful smile on her face. Sadly, 16 weeks after being diagnosed with lung cancer and a brain tumour Jane passed away in August 2020.
It was a terrible time for myself and Vicki and also my son Mark who were together through her illness helping each other to care for Jane as she battled her cancer.
Following this we had the funeral and are now in the process of selling Jane's house, so it has been a traumatic year even without the side issue of a worldwide pandemic.
So why was it a great year? The first reason is it enabled myself and Jane, as well as our children to share some special, unforgettable moments. Jane and I split in 2001 and it was the first time I was really able to re-communicate with both her and my children.
A lot of people have been through a similar experience this year. We have been stuck behind closed doors and have been able to realise that when it seems like the world is coming to an end, the one real thing that matters is family and friends. All the money and possessions in the world can not protect you from the virus if it decides to take its full toll on you.
This is a photographers blog so apart from the the emotional hardships endured this year it has allowed me on a personal level to re-think my flagging business. Over the past few years I had lost my way and my desire to do a job that I was so passionate about when I first started.
202o has given me time to get back the enthusiasm I once had. To refresh my training and to set in place a new plan to get back to work. During the year I have taken and passed level 2 and 3 Digital Marketing for business courses. During lockdown I have also taken and passed A photoshop Masterclass and Advanced Photoshop training course. I have used such great resources as Linkedin learning, You tube and Kelby training. Watched hour upon hour of training films, researched new ideas for all things photography that will enable me to go in to 2021 refreshed and ready to go again.
Without the Pandemic I maybe might not have had the time to spend so much time with Jane in her final few months. I would not have had time to watch and learn, take notes, and get back to basics with my business.
If you look at all the experts who were shown on the news giving insights and updates on the pandemic, behind every expert was usually a case full of books. These educated people all soak up knowledge. They read, they study and they never stop learning. That's what we should all aspire to. 2020 was a time to reboot, re-think our lives, value our families our friends and our jobs. So in my opinion 2020 was a great year. I would be happy to hear your thoughts.
